Aquamation Services of Maine (ASM) is committed to providing respectful and dignified end of life service for furry loved ones.

Aquamation is cremation using water and is a gentle, eco-friendly alternative to flame cremation. This process simply speeds up natural decomposition by using heat, water and alkali. Scientifically, aquamation is known as alkaline hydrolysis where a solution of 95% water and 5% alkali breakdown all organic material into their most basic building blocks.

It is an environmentally friendly choice because there are no direct emissions of harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere thereby reducing the warming effect of climate change. The process is also energy efficient; greater than 90% energy savings compared to flame cremation with 1/10th of the carbon footprint.

Additionally, there are two options for the water used in this process. The first option is to clean the water and recycle it at a wastewater treatment plant. The second option for the water is to use it as an organic fertilizer. The effluent (processed water) has been land applied since 2001 and either way water cremation benefits our environment. As compared to flame cremation, families receive 20% to 30% more ash when the remains are returned as well.

Lastly and potentially most importantly, the process does not rely on fossil fuels. Electricity powers our machine and as Maine begins to improve its infrastructure for cleaner energy, we might be able to use sources like wind, solar, or even tidal energy.

ASM is Maine's first company to provide aquamation services for pets so chances are your veterinarian does not know about us or is under contract to use a company providing flame cremation. Still, you have a choice and you need to notify your veterinarian that you have chosen us to provide cremation services for your lost loved one.
